The British army learnt a huge amount from its experience in WW2, and non more so than in how to fight in extreme environments. The Chindits for example, a long range penetration group who fought behind enemy lines in Burma, became experts in jungle fighting and survival. It was based on input from these sources that the British created this style of jungle trouser. The meagre rations and constant disease in the jungles of southeast Asia meant men lost weight, and the double straps on either side are designed to tie down as weight-loss sets in. Known as the Jungle or Gurkha trousers, their official designation is the 1950 pattern, and they were issued through the 1960s. These pants would see heavy use in Malaya, Suez and Aden amongst others. I believe this pair to be a later version dating to the 1960s.
