A really rather wonderful and rare piece to offer! This is a 1938 dated US Army/CCC Mackinaw, often referred to in collecting circles as a Transport Coat. So elusive are these pieces that I actually know very little about their use, though the name would suggest they were originally intended for the Transportation Corps. What I can tell you, is that this example is produced on a CCC contract number, with CIV clearly visible on the spec tag. Funnily enough, this contract is actually pretty well documented as it appears the manufacturer Northbilt sued the government after the government rejected many of the garments when delivered to Eighth Corps Area General Depot, Fort Sam Houston, Texas in 1939! You can read more about it here!
This is a beautifully made piece from heavy kersey wool, complete with two pockets on the waist, and double layers of wool on the back and shoulders!
Condition
Absolutely mint, few signs of use. Some slight staining to the white tag is all.
