Up there with the rarest of the rare, and a pinnacle piece in any US Navy collection, this is a pre-war Submariner jacket. Made exclusively for use in Submarines, these would be replaced very quickly but the zip jungle cloth deck jacket. Many of the photos I have of them in use from the early 40s show a mixture of the two styles being worn. Made of a wonderful charcoal grey kersey wool with a very slight herringbone weave, these really are a simple yet beautifully crafted piece. A straight shape, two pocket front with a collar that can be buttoned closed. Simple perfection.
Condition
Absolutely mint, it's missing the label in the neck, and you can still see very slightly where the stitching would have been, but otherwise it's absolutely perfect.
