My god, is this a jacket and a half. This incredibly rare 1959 Extreme Cold Weather Deck Jacket is the forerunner to the rather more common A1 Jacket that was used throughout the 60s Vietnam era. However, there are some substantial differences. First, and most notably, is the removable zip hood. This connects via a zip which when not in use can be hidden beneath a placket running around the neck. Secondly is a large pocket on the sleeve that would be removed in later variations. These jackets were designed to help provide both extreme insulation and help with floatation should the wearer go overboard, and the removable liner seems to be made of a plastic foam.

These jackets typically belonged to a boat, and this example is stamped to the USS Albany, a heavy cruiser who just missed WW2, but would be converted in 1958 to a guided missile cruiser. I would imagine this jacket was used extensively during the 5 years she spent in the chilly waters of the North Atlantic in the early 60s. Rather unusually she's also named to an individual, so opportunity to research if the new owner chooses.

Condition:

This is in amazing, worn condition. There are a couple of spots of black paint to the front and arms, which really isn't that noticeable against the dark green nylon shell. The knits have a couple of small holes to the inner waist band, but nothing on the exterior and are largely in great shape. The hood is brand new.
