Toward the middle of the war, the US Navy would look to update and improve its uniforms to allow it to operate effectively across all the theatres in which is was operating. To do this it looked at pieces from the other services that could be redesigned. The N4 Field Jacket was one of the pieces produced. Very closely related to the Army's M41, the N4 was a similar design with a few updates including removing the epaulettes, and the colour becoming olive drab over the Army's khaki. They were made for Navy personnel who operated on shore, medics, seabees etc
The particular example was made by S Liebovitz & Sons Inc, Knoxville, TN, on a contract dated November 1944.
