By 1943 the US Navy had redeveloped a lot of its service clothing, particularly for those who would be serving with ground combat units. The new, more appropriately coloured green and khaki uniforms would have a N reference number, N-1, N-2 and N-3. Issued as part of a four piece utility uniform, along with a shirt, trousers and jacket, the N-3 utility pants would lean heavily on the design of earlier US Army trousers, and come in both a cotton twill and HBT fabric.
