By 1943 the US Navy had redeveloped a lot of its service clothing, particularly for those who would be serving with ground combat units. The new, more appropriately coloured green and khaki uniforms would have a N reference number, N-1, N-2 and N-3. Issued as part of a four piece utility uniform, along with pants, trousers and shirt, the N-3 utility shirt would be similar in pattern to the chambray denim, but made of a lightweight green cotton.
