The 55th Weather Recon Squadron was established as part of the 20th Air Force to monitor weather over the western pacific in support of operations from Saipan and Tinian. After being inactivated postwar, they would once again be called upon as part of Strategic Air Command to not only provide weather data, but also supporting atomic testing with radioactivity monitoring. During this period the squadron would fly the both the B-29, and it's upgraded big brother, the WB-50. This cap dates around 1955, and very very unusually, I have pictures of crewmen wearing them!

Condition

This is in good vintage condition. Rather unusually for caps of the period, it's cotton so no moth damage etc. The genuine leather sweatband is in good condition and the tag intact but faded.

Size

  • Fits a modern 7 3/8 with a little room to spare
