US Army M-1948 Parka Set
As the war came to a close the US was becoming increasingly aware of a new threat in the east , and set about a programme of modernisation to fight what could potentially become a much colder war. In the M48 the Army found a great combination. A heavy windproof shell and interchangeable lining that could be swapped out depending upon temperature. Both M48 would find use in the early years of the Korean War, but as the US faced the reality of fighting a larger war in freezing temperatures, it proved too complex and costly to produce.
This example is rather unusual in that it comes with a very rare variation of the lining that was made in Japan from pile fur in a snow white colour. I've only ever seen a small handful of these liners.
However, it's fame grew, not through soldiers, but on the backs on a young English cultural movement of the early 60s - The Mods. The 48 was the parka of choice for zipping around London on a Vespa to a soundtrack of The Stones, Yardbirds and Kinks.
Condition
Good used condition. The shell is great, some light wear to the back and missing the pull tie. The liner has some wear. I've done some subtle repairs to the seams (from the inside), though there is still obvious wear to the buttons holes. The rayon lining is very delicate and this should be worn with care.
